On Christmas Eve, I'm going to live stream how to make my mother's famous Holiday Cheeseball. If you want to make it with me, I'll post the ingredients below. But first, a little bit about my memories of the cheeseball.
Every holiday was special in our house. My mother brought out the fine china, the linens, the candles, and the crystal. Everything sparkled and shone. We always had sparkling grape juice and appetizers on little plates. I always felt very grown up at these parties where the whole family would come and everyone was wearing their holiday best and my dad and my Uncle Jim would argue about the ham before rolling around on the carpet after the meal groaning about how they ate too much.
The great-uncles would drink highballs and the aunties would all be in the kitchen bustling around getting scrumptious things ready while my grandmother would sit in a comfy chair and giggle with the little ones as they tried to impress her with their gymnastics. But the greatest thing of all was my mother's enormous cheeseball. I would help her make it every year the day before the party. I wasn't allowed to have much dairy (because my mother insisted I had a milk allergy. It took me 40 years but I think maybe she was right though I denied it for most of my life.)
But on the special holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas, I was allowed to eat the cheeseball. There is no describing how that cheeseball made me happy. It was such a treat to me. Luckily, my children love it too and only one of them has a lactaid issue (which she solves with a pill). I carry that tradition on in my house every Thanksgiving and every Christmas and this year I'm going to share it with you.
